Here's a few shots of Lucas Foster, Encinitas local, San Dieguito Academy Surf Team member, and friend of ours. He has gone from a scrawny little grom to a full-fledged young ripper - and is extremely polished on his longboard. Recently picked-up and sponsored by Murphy Surfboards, we think this upcoming year is going to see many good things from this talented wave rider. Thanks to Pierce M. Kavanagh (PMK) for these fine photos.

I've known Lucas since he was one. He was my next door neighbor. I watched him grow up and his dad and I would wonder if he'd get into surfing or blow it off since "the old man did it". It can go either way.
Well, he's all grown up and the guessing is over. He likes to surf. I was so stoked to hear that he did so well at the NSSA finals this last weekend. He is just a freshman so he has plenty of time to work his way up to number one. His dad couldn't be more stoked. He loves the events and is a self proclaimed "Stage Mom".
Not only can Lucas surf but the kid is a genius. He gets great grades and is on the debate team. When he was 5 or so he would beat grownups online in world domination strategy games.
Now that the contests are over he is on to the next thing, shaping. He, his younger brother Logan and his brother's best friend Sean Turbeville (all under 14) are starting to shape. They are stoked on it. They are under the guidance of one of Lecuadia's long time shapers John Turbeville. John made boards for me for years and I still ride them. He's stopped production shaping and is now stoked to teach the kids how to do it.
Lucas, it has been a pleasure to watch you grow up, my friend, and do so well in life and surfing. Keep it up!

I was down at Cardiff the other day and ran into Lucas and his dad. Here are a couple of shots of him and his first free board. Lucas was having a great time and I had a blast shooting him. I was just so stoked, I've known him since he was a baby and now he's hang'n ten. Enjoy.

Dreams Do Come True - Free Boards, Photo Shoots and Burritos

My friend Lucas Foster, 14, had his dreams come true last week when Iron Cross picked him up as a team rider. While hanging out at Cardiff doing his thing the guys at Iron Cross noticed him for his style and attitude and offered him a spot on the team. With that spot comes the dream, free boards, photo shoots and burritos.
Apparently they are making him a board as I write. In the mean time, here he is out at Cardiff riding their 10'2" Mother Load. Lucas' dad Aaron is a long time friend and is happily living his life through Lucas and his brother Logan. The best thing about Aaron is that he has no ego. As long as he gets to tag along on the surf trips and hang out in the factory he is a happy camper. As a parent who grew up surfing this is like a second chance.
My hat goes off to Iron Cross for picking a solid kid. I've known Lucas since he was 1 and couldn't be happier for him. Iron Cross was the brand of the Longboard Grotto, a Leucadia staple for years. I heard that the brand is under new ownership. I'm glad it isn't dead. I just hope they bring back Dennis Murphy to shape a few boards as well for old time sake.

Lucas paying respect to his dad.
While digging through some photo archives Erik Baldwin gave me a while back, I set these aside as I liked them and the person they are of. The longboard loving grom in the shots is Lucas Foster, son of Grandview local Aaron Foster. I've featured Lucas for his wax art before but never his surfing. I've known Lucas for all his life and it is a great pleasure to see him in the water with so much stoke. He and his brother Logan are doing great out there and it is so much fun to watch! Lucas is also one of those young guys who takes his logging seriously. Looking to Tudor for influence, he likes his longboards old school and single. You will see a lot of Lucas at Beacons and Cardiff this summer.
